The Finnish Geoportal, Paikkatietoikkuna has won the Quality Innovation of the Year award in the category for public sector and non-profit corporations in a competition organized by Excellence Finland. The National Land Survey of Finland has created the service in collaboration with several data producers.
In the Finnish Geoportal the users can browse maps provided by different organizations on various subjects, such as the terrain, property division, soil, land use and the transport network. Map layers and aerial photos can be viewed in the service on top of each other by adjusting their transparency.
The European Inspire directive as well as the Finnish act and decree on spatial information infrastructure oblige the authorities to provide View and Download services. A significant number of map layers on different subjects will be added to Paikkatietoikkuna in the near future.
The map services are based on interface services built using open standards. The user interface is implemented using open source code, which can be downloaded and used under a GPL-based license.
