New datasets have been added in the geoportal Paikkatietoikkuna.fi. These include for example the open and free geospatial data sets of Statistics Finland. The release of the datasets relates to the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive of the European Union.
On 15 May 2013, the geoportal received datasets from Statistics Finland, university of Jyväskylä and the city of Valkeakoski.
Statistics Finland now offers basic population data in the form of online maps (1 km x 1 km) and by statistical areas. Basic data on educational institutions as well as on production and industrial plants are also available. These spatial data can be downloaded free of charge at the website of Statistics Finland.
Jyväskylä University and the Finnish municipalities maintain a databank (LIPAS) that contains all the places where you can engage in physical exercise in Finland. Now all these places can also be found via the geoportal Paikkatietoikkuna.fi. The data includes hiking and jogging tracks, sports grounds and facilities as map layers in the online service.
The city of Valkeakoski has given its base map, combined plan map and simplified cadastral map as well as its orthophotos and guide maps to be viewed via Paikkatietoikkuna.
Hundreds of Finnish datasets available
"The new map layers make the geospatial data supply increasingly versatile. Statistical data is a central part of the national data reserve. The city of Valkeakoski is the 9th municipality that publishes its basic data via Paikkatietoikkuna," says Chief Expert Antti Rainio from the National Land Survey of Finland.
There are now approximately 350 map layers from over 30 organisations available in the geoportal. In addition to government offices, the parties include nine municipalities, five regional councils and other organisations.
"Paikkatietoikkuna will be developed further so that we will, for example, get more out of statistical data in the form of thematic maps and tables," Antti Rainio says in conclusion.
EU obliges to provide access to the data
The release of the datasets is connected to the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive of the European Union. Every member state is obliged to release data on agreed topics. The data is available to everyone.
The national report on INSPIRE 2010–2012 was released and sent to the European Commission on 15 May 2013.
